Yokohama is a city in Japan, the capital of Kanagawa Prefecture, located on the main island of Honshu, in southwestern Tokyo Bay. It is about 30 kilometers from Tokyo.
Yokohama was once a small fishing port, a natural shoreline stretching for a considerable distance, surrounded by rolling hills. It was here that American Constable Matthew Perry landed in 1854, breaking the embargo imposed by the shogunate. After the forced opening of the country, the port became a transit point for goods, as well as foreign engineers and craftsmen residing in the country. Many Japanese also departed from Yokohama for America and Europe during the Reform era.
The Great Yokohama Earthquake of 1923 destroyed approximately 90% of the city. It was quickly rebuilt, only to be devastated again by American bombing raids during World War II, which killed more than half of the city's population.
After the war, the Americans established a military base in the northern half of the port. The area was later returned to the city, leading to a major urban development project for the city and another for the port.
In 2002, Yokohama hosted the FIFA World Cup. A stadium with a capacity of over 72,000 was built for the occasion, and the city had the honor of hosting the tournament's final match.
Yokohama is the largest port in Japan and the second most populous city after Tokyo. Together, they form the world's largest metropolitan area, known as Keihin (a combination of the names of the two cities). This vast area of residential and industrial buildings stretches uninterrupted and also includes the city of Kawasaki.
The city is relatively young (about a century and a half old). It has been demolished and rebuilt several times during this period, and these events have contributed to the city's current appearance.
