Egypt, Damietta | 1900-1910

Dr. Waheed Shuaib, a professor at the Faculty of Arts at Damietta University, says:

"The history of Damietta Governorate dates back to the Pharaonic era, when Lower Egypt was divided into 20 districts. The city of Damietta was known in ancient Egyptian texts as Dmitio, meaning 'the inhabitants of the port,' a name that was transformed in Coptic as Tamit, in Greek as Tamitis, and then became Damiette in European languages."
