The tomb of Prince Sunbul ibn Abdullah al-Tawashi, later converted into a private burial ground for the Darkal family.
Located in the al-Midan neighborhood of Damascus.
This historic stone gate is located in the ancient al-Midan neighborhood of Damascus. It is all that remains of the tomb of Prince Sunbul ibn Abdullah al-Tawashi, one of the Mamluk funerary monuments closely associated with the history of Damascus in the late Mamluk period. It is believed that the tomb dates back to the 15th century CE, when Damascene architecture flourished, characterized by the use of black and white stone in the famous "ablaq" style that distinguished the historic buildings of Damascus.
Prince Sunbul was one of the high-ranking eunuchs in the Mamluk state. Eunuchs held sensitive administrative, military, and religious positions within the court. This tomb was built as a burial ground and religious monument, bearing the characteristics of a waqf (endowment), like many tombs of princes and scholars in Damascus at that time.
The facade visible in the image is distinguished by its intricate stone carvings and beautiful geometric circular patterns, as well as the use of alternating light and dark stones—a distinctive Damascene architectural style for which Mamluk buildings in Syria were renowned. The massive arched entrance also reflects the status of the tomb's owner and its architectural significance.
Over time, the building's function changed. The tomb later became a private burial ground for the Darkal family, one of Damascus's prominent families, thus continuing its funerary function for centuries, even as names and owners changed.
Today, these remains are among the rare examples of Mamluk funerary architecture in the Al-Midan neighborhood, offering a powerful visual glimpse into Old Damascus, where religious, social, and architectural history are interwoven into the city's rich tapestry.
