1857 Syria, Al-Qasab Mosque in Damascus
The Al-Qasab Mosque is considered one of the oldest and most renowned historic mosques in Damascus. It is located in the Al-Amara quarter within the Old City, near the branches of the Barada River that once flowed gently through the narrow alleys and beneath the traditional Damascene houses, giving the area its distinctive charm for centuries.
The origins of the mosque date back to the early Islamic period, though its greatest prominence emerged during the Ayyubid and Mamluk eras, when it became one of the important religious and architectural landmarks of Damascus. The mosque derived its name from the surrounding district of “Al-Qasab,” an area historically known for its dense reeds and water vegetation growing along the nearby canals and waterways.
The mosque’s minaret appears prominently in some of the earliest surviving photographs of Damascus from the 19th century, particularly in images captured by pioneering European travelers and photographers such as Francis Frith and others, who were fascinated by the picturesque sight of Damascene houses suspended above flowing canals and small stone bridges woven into the old quarters.
Al-Qasab Mosque became known for its modest yet authentic Damascene architectural style, where ancient stonework blended harmoniously with projecting wooden balconies and waterside façades, creating a scene that perfectly embodied the spirit of old Damascus before the sweeping urban transformations of the modern age.
Today, the rare photographs of Al-Qasab Mosque and its surrounding waterways remain among the most valuable visual records of 19th-century Damascus — a city once famously described by European travelers as “the city of rivers, gardens, and mosques suspended above the water.”
