Galmberti House in the Balad neighborhood, Jeddah, circa 1884

Saudi Arabia - Jeddah - Al-Balad District

A luxurious and relatively large house built in a hybrid style that blends traditional Red Sea architecture with the tropical modernism prevalent in the late nineteenth century, this is the Galimberti Commercial House in Jeddah.

Galimberti was an Italian adventurer and entrepreneur born in 1853 from the vicinity of Venice. He came to Jeddah and settled there in 1879. He worked supplying Wertheim's iron safes to the port of Jeddah. He then rose through the ranks of the Italian and Austrian communities in Jeddah and the Red Sea region, eventually rising to the position of Austrian Vice Consul in Jeddah from 1890 to 1905, the highest consular representation at the time. He also held the agency of one of the most prominent shipping companies at the time, the monopoly on European transportation to Jeddah: Austrian Lloyd.
