Entrance to the Sphinx Temple, Giza, Egypt – 1894
This rare photograph, taken by Robert E. M. Bain in 1894, shows the entrance to the Sphinx Temple following early archaeological excavations. Massive limestone blocks, the temple entrance, and visitors with pack animals provide a fascinating glimpse into the site during the late 19th century.
The Sphinx Temple is one of the oldest surviving stone temples in Ancient Egypt. Built during the Fourth Dynasty, it forms an integral part of the Great Sphinx and Giza Pyramid complex.
