Egypt, Asyut, Manfalut, 1856
A wonderful photo of the city of Manfalut in Asyut Governorate, Egypt, in the mid-nineteenth century, during the reign of Governor Said Pasha. The photo was taken by the French photographer Frédéric during his trip to Egypt and Yemen between 1855 and 1856 AD.
Manfalut is famous for its pomegranate cultivation, but this fame has a story. Like any other land in Egypt, Manfalut grows vegetables and fruits. However, during the reign of Khedive Ismail, the head of the Scouts in Manfalut, Ayyoub Bey Gamal El-Din, was associated with members of the Shura Council of Representatives. During the pomegranate harvest season in Manfalut, he would take a quantity of pomegranates with him and give them as gifts to members of Parliament. Of course, the members of Parliament came from all over the country, and when they returned to their hometowns, they would also give some of these pomegranates to their families and loved ones. When they asked about their source, they would respond, "Pomegranates from Manfalut."
Thus, Manfalut became famous for its pomegranate cultivation. .
