Suleiman Pasha Frenchman, and his family in 1842
The rarest, oldest, and clearest photograph of Suleiman Pasha al-Faransawi and his sons, dated 1842 AD.
Suleiman Pasha al-Faransawi, also known as Colonel Joseph Anthelme Sève, was born in 1788 AD in Lyon, France. He came to Egypt with the French campaign, remained there, and converted to Islam. He was the commander-in-chief of the Egyptian army during the reign of Khedive Abbas.
Muhammad Ali entrusted him with the task of forming the first nucleus of officers who would assist him in training Egyptian soldiers. He selected 500 of his own Mamluks to begin with, choosing Aswan as a base camp for this mission, far from the conspiracies of the mixed army and their resistance to all new developments. Muhammad Ali appointed him commander of the army.
Muhammad Ali had attempted to make the Bash-Buzuks (a mixture of Albanians, Circassians, and Dalat) the nucleus of the regular army, but his attempt failed. His daughter married Muhammad Sharif Pasha (a multiple Prime Minister of Egypt) and had a daughter with him who married Abdul Rahim Sabri Pasha (Minister of Agriculture). This marriage resulted in the birth of the former Queen of Egypt, Nazli Sabri, also known as Queen Nazli, wife of King Ahmed Fouad and mother of King Farouk, the last king of Egypt.
In appreciation of this man, credited with building the modern Egyptian army, Egyptians erected a statue in his honor in the square bearing his name and named a street after him in Cairo.
Suleiman Pasha died in March 1860 and was buried in the Farnsawy district of Old Cairo, opposite Rawda Island in Cairo, where his grave still stands with its famous dome and surrounded by an iron fence.
This photograph is one of the rarest and among the oldest photographs of Egypt taken in 1842 AD during the reign of Muhammad Ali Pasha.
