Egypt, Sohag, El-Balyana Center, 1856
A photograph described by the French photographer "café à El-Balyana Égypte" (meaning "coffee shop") in the city of El-Balyana, currently located in Sohag Governorate, in the mid-nineteenth century. The photographer took the image during his trip to Egypt between 1855 and 1856 AD, during which he visited many Egyptian cities and governorates.
The El-Balyana Center has a rich history. Historians believe that the reason for its name is that it was named Paulina after the ancient Egyptian queen (descended from the lineage of King Menes (Narmer), the unifier of the two lands).
Over the centuries, the name was corrupted from Paulina to Balina, then to Balina, the current name. It contains the famous temple of Abydos, known as the Buried Araba, which dates back to the ancient Egyptian period.
Balina was formerly one of the villages affiliated with the Bardis Center or Bardis District. At the beginning of the last century, the center was moved to the city of Balina, and Bardis became one of the villages affiliated with the El-Balyana Center.
