Egypt, Girga city in Sohag, 1856
Girga, an Egyptian city, administratively falls under the Sohag Governorate. The name derives from the ancient Egyptian word "Girga," meaning estate, institution, or facility, and may also mean neighborhood or village.
In ancient Egypt, it was known as "Girga Mery Amun Ramses," meaning "Foundation of Ramses II, lover of Amun."
Some sources mention that the area was named after Gergio (a pharaonic princess), sister of Ramses II. However, historically, the first occurrence of the name Girga was Dgirga.
Its names varied and changed over time, from Abadhu to Tuman, Dager, Dagerger, and Dgirga during the Pharaonic era, then Gerga in the third century during the Coptic era, until it was finally called Girga.
