Abdali Warriors Yemen, Lahej 1870 IBS

This rare historical photograph captures a scene from the city of Aden in the year 1870 , offering a visual glimpse into southern Arabia during the 19th century. The image shows Abdali Warriors

At the time, Aden was under British colonial rule, having been occupied by the British in January 1839 and later developed into a major port colony on the route to India. In contrast, northern Yemen, including Sana’a and its surroundings, was under the control of the Zaydi Imamate since 1826, ruled initially by Imam Abdullah bin Hamza and later by Imam Yahya.

This north–south division continued throughout the 19th and much of the 20th century, with North Yemen (Zaydi religious rule) and South Yemen (British-controlled) functioning separately. Yemen was not unified until May 22, 1990, when the Republic of Yemen was established.
