Minaret of the Zabid Mosque, Yemen, 1855

This timeless photograph depicts a historic mosque in the city of Zabid, Yemen, in the Al Hudaydah Governorate, dating back to around 1855 AD. The photograph documents one of the oldest and most important mosques in Yemen.

Zabid has long been a prominent Islamic cultural center, playing a pivotal role in the dissemination of Islamic knowledge and jurisprudence, and a beacon of learning for leading scholars. The pictured mosque features architectural features unique to the Tihama region of Yemen, evident in its distinctive wooden columns and authentic Islamic style.

At the time of the photograph (the mid-19th century), Yemen was experiencing a complex political divide. North Yemen, including Zabid, was ruled by the Zaidi imams in Sana'a, who were competing for internal influence. South Yemen, including Aden, was under British colonial rule.

Zabid remained a vital center of religious learning and cultural influence until the beginning of the major changes of the 20th century, and with the unification of Yemen in 1990.

This image provides us not only with a glimpse of an architectural landmark, but also with a window into Zabid's immense cultural value as an Islamic center of jurisprudence and learning during that era.
