Egypt, Sohag Coffee and Bar, 1929

The history of Sohag dates back to ancient times, when Abydos (now located in the Balina district) was the capital of Egypt during the first four dynasties. King Menes, or Narmer, is widely considered by historians to be the first unifier of Egypt during ancient times.

During Ottoman rule in Egypt, the area where the governorate now lies was transformed into a special governorate called the Upper Egypt Governorate or the Girga Governorate. Its capital was the city of Girga, the capital of the governorate during the Middle Ages under the rule of Muhammad Ali.

When Egypt was divided into directorates, it was renamed the Girga Governorate, retaining that name despite the transfer of the governorate headquarters to Sohag. The governorate headquarters was later renamed Sohag City.

Under the Local Administration Law of 1960, the governorate was transformed into a governorate and given its current name.
