One of the most tranquil areas in Alexandria, it is located within the central district and adjacent to the Moharram Bey area and the Shalalat Gardens.

The name dates back to the mid-nineteenth century, when, under the supervision of the Egyptian government and subject to certain conditions, the Governor of Egypt, Said Pasha, authorized a foreign company in 1858 to construct fresh water lines, water filtration, purification, and sterilization tanks, and pipes along the main streets to distribute fresh water to the residents of Alexandria and its suburbs.

The company chose a site behind Bab Rashid (currently Bab Sharqi) and near the Mahmoudia Canal, which was later renamed the Vabour El-Mayah area. Among the most famous places in the Vabour El-Mayah area are the Olympic Club, the second oldest Egyptian club, founded in 1905; the Maternity Hospital (Maternity Hospital); and the villa of the world-famous architect Auguste Perret (Villa Aghion).

Vabbour El-Mayah Square was renamed in 1995 after the Egyptian scientist Dr. Ahmed Zewail. Unknown
