Egypt, the first photograph of Cairo In 1839
The first photograph of Egypt was of Mamluk Tombs in Cairo 1839
Frédéric Goupil-Fesquet was a French painter and photographer who took the first photograph of Egypt and Jerusalem during a trip he made from France during the reign of Muhammad Ali Pasha in 1839 AD.
In October 1839, Goupil-Fesquet sailed from the port of Marseille to Alexandria, Egypt, on a photographic voyage.
A few months earlier, on August 19, 1839, Daguerre had published the daguerreotype method.
Fesquet's voyage was innovative: he carried photographic equipment with him, had briefly studied the basics of photography beforehand, and had taken photographs in places that had never been photographed before.
He set out on the journey with a large-format camera, a tripod, and boxes containing photographic metal plates and chemicals that would serve him well on a journey that would last several months.
Until the advent of photography, people read about famous sites around the world, relying on written descriptions or illustrations and drawings. The development of photography made it possible to publish images of these sites.
These photographs revolutionized the lives of ordinary people, who were unable to visit famous sites themselves (only a small percentage of the population was able to travel abroad at the time).
Fueled by their passion for photographing famous sites, Noël Paymal-Lorrebourg, a French painter and photographer, turned to producing illustrated stories. He provided Vesquet with the camera he used during this trip. During the trip, Vesquet was accompanied by his uncle, the French painter Horace Vernet, who engraved the photographs, which were then displayed on silver plates.
The sea voyage ended in Alexandria, Egypt, and from there, the delegation continued to Cairo and south to take photographs of the Pyramids and various other sites.
From Cairo, the delegation traveled overland to Jerusalem, where they stayed from December 11 to 14, 1839.
