The Crimean War broke out in the mid-nineteenth century between the Russian Empire on one side and the Ottoman Empire, supported by Britain, France, and later the Kingdom of Sardinia, on the other. Although most of its major battles took place on the Crimean Peninsula overlooking the Black Sea, the causes of the conflict extended far beyond the region. They were deeply connected to the European struggle for influence and to the uncertain future of the weakening Ottoman Empire, which had become widely known in European political circles as “the Sick Man of Europe.”
