In 1853, Russian forces occupied the principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia, which were under Ottoman sovereignty. In response, the Ottoman Empire declared war. Following the destruction of the Ottoman fleet at the Battle of Sinop, Britain and France intervened militarily and formally declared war on Russia in 1854, transforming the conflict into a major international confrontation.
