Yemen, Aden, Sheep Market, 1870

This rare photograph shows a scene from the sheep market in Aden as it appeared in 1870. It is one of the few visual documents documenting aspects of life in southern Arabia during the 19th century.

At this time, Aden was under British colonial control, having been captured in January 1839, later becoming a strategic maritime colony within the British Empire. Meanwhile, northern Yemen (Sana'a and the surrounding areas) had been under the rule of the Zaidi Imamate since 1826, led by Imam Abdullah ibn Hamza, and later by Imam Yahya.
