Yemen , View of Aden from Ship 1920
This rare historical photograph captures a view of the port city of Aden in 1920 , providing a visual glimpse of southern Arabia during the 19th century. A view of Aden from a ship and naval vessels.
At that time, Aden was under British colonial rule, having been occupied by the British in January 1839, and later developed into a major coastal colony on the route to India. In contrast, northern Yemen, including Sana'a and its surroundings, had been under the control of the Zaidi Imamate since 1826, initially ruled by Imam Abdullah ibn Hamzah and later by Imam Yahya.
This north-south division persisted throughout the 19th century and most of the 20th century, with North Yemen (under Zaidi religious rule) and South Yemen (under British control) operating separately. Yemen was not unified until May 22, 1990, when the Republic of Yemen was established.
