village in Hodeida 1855
This rare photograph shows a view of the city of Al Hodeida in the mid-19th-century, captured by French sculptor and explorer Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi.
At that time, Al Hodeida was a key commercial and administrative center within the Tihama region of Yemen, acting as a hub for traders and locals due to its convenient location along internal routes.
Yemen was then divided, with the north under Zaydi Imamate and the south (including Aden) under British administration.
This image reflects the architectural style, the way of life, and the character of the city during a period that predated the significant political and social transformation that Yemen would undergo in the 20th-century.
