This historical photograph from 1880 captures the entrance to the Port of Aden, one of the British Empire’s key maritime gateways to the Arabian Peninsula during the 19th century.
By that time, Aden was under British control (since 1839) as part of the Aden Colony, serving as a critical coaling and supply station on the route from Suez to India.
