The Amshaji with his cane and distinctive clothing, 1860
Egypt - The Amshaji Profession
This is an extinct profession that existed in Egypt and other countries around the world until the last century. The Amshaji was the person who cleared the way for the carriages of the elite and prominent statesmen.
The Amshaji was famous for a phrase that Egyptians still repeat today:
"Make way, you man, you and him!"
"Make way and pray for the Prophet."
He would run in front of horse-drawn carriages to clear the way for them.
