Egypt, a Sawaris cart in the streets of Cairo in 1905

A rare sight of a Sawaris cart (al-Darasa - al-Qalaa Line) in the streets of Cairo at the beginning of the twentieth century, circa 1905.

A Sawaris cart is a wooden wagon pulled by mules or horses. It was used as a means of passenger transportation in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It was called "Emnibus" , but the name later evolved into "Sawaris" (Sawares) after its owner, who belonged to one of the most prominent Jewish families of the time, the Sawaris family, which monopolized this type of business along with a small number of other Jewish families living in Egypt.

Al-Sawaris had more than one line:
The Citadel-Hussein line, passing through Al-Maghrablin and the Metwalli Gate
The Citadel-Sayyida Zeinab line, passing through the Observatory Basin and Pharaoh's Pool
And the Sayyida-Hussein line...

Finally, we remember the famous line of "Mrs. Amina" in the movie "Between the Two Palaces": "Al-Sawaris shocked me, Mr. Sayyid"!!
