Egypt, Sphinx - Pyramids of Giza, 1862

Just before sunset on the evening of March 4, 1862, they arrived at the Pyramids of Giza and paused to gaze intently at this stone monster that had been crouching there for thousands of years.

Edward VII, Prince of Wales—later King of England—accompanied by the famous photographer Francis Bedford and some members of the Batran tribe with their camels, all of them arrived at the Pyramids of Giza moments before sunset. While Prince Edward stood in front of the Great Sphinx, photographer Bedford quickly stood on a slightly elevated hill and prepared to take this photograph to document the English prince's journey.

Afterwards, a two-tent camp was set up below the Pyramid of Khufu for accommodation and overnight stays until the next morning, in order to climb the pyramid before sunrise.

This photograph is preserved in the British Royal Archives and records all these details.
