Egypt, The Prince of Wales at the Pyramids of Giza in 1862

The Prince of Wales and his entourage during their visit to Egypt in 1862.

Just before sunset on the evening of March 4, 1862, they arrived at the Pyramids of Giza and paused to gaze intently at this stone monster that has lain there for thousands of years.

Edward VII, Prince of Wales—later King of England—accompanied by the famous photographer Francis Bedford and some members of the Batran tribe with their camels, all of them had just arrived at the Pyramids of Giza moments before sunset. Bedford hurried to prepare to capture this photograph to document the English prince's journey.

A camp of two tents was then set up beneath the Pyramid of Khufu for accommodation and overnight stays until the following morning, in order to climb the pyramid before sunrise.

The photographer took several photographs of the pyramids, the Sphinx, and the Valley Temple. Four of these photographs are published on the website in high quality.

These photographs are preserved in the British Royal Archives, and all these details are recorded.
