Al-Munjid, Cotton Sorter or Dresser – Cairo, Egypt – 1870

A rare Carte de Visite (CDV) photograph from 1870 shows an Egyptian worker in Cairo sorting or preparing cotton.
Workers at this stage of the production chain were responsible for preparing raw cotton before it was sold or sent for spinning.
The photograph captures a vital part of the Egyptian cotton economy in the 19th century, a time when Khedivial Egypt was considered one of the world's most important sources of raw cotton.
