munjid Standing – Egypt – 1860
This rare 1860 photograph captures one of Egypt’s oldest traditional crafts — upholstery.
It shows an Egyptian upholsterer (al-munjid) seated among his tools, working by hand to stuff and cover cushions and seating.
The photo was taken by the renowned French duo Emile and Hippolyte Béchard, who documented everyday professions and working-class life in Ottoman Egypt.
It reflects the manual precision and pride in craftsmanship that defined Egyptian artisanship in the 19th century.
