Egypt, Albanians working as grooms in 1865

French photographer Hermé Desiree documented two Albanians living in Egypt in the mid-nineteenth century working as grooms in 1865 AD.

The Amshaji is the groom who works in the horse care profession and guards the Pasha’s carriage while it is moving in the streets. He runs beside it or in front of it holding a stick and shouts to the people, “Wait, you and him,” to inform them that there is an important person passing by, as a way of paying respect to his master.
