Egypt, Al-Amshgiya (Sais runners) 1889
This photo shows two former "amshgi" (a now-extinct profession) walking in front of a horse-drawn carriage to widen the road on a Cairo street in 1889.
As we mentioned before, the amshgi's job was to walk, guard, and widen the road for the carriages of the wealthy, the elite, and prominent statesmen. These carriages were, of course, horse-drawn at that time, before the invention of the automobile. They had a famous phrase: "Make it wide, man."
